Comp 410 Journal Grading Guidelines
Journal Content:
- Milestone sections refer to your personal tasks for the week, both technical and customer-related. Development process sections refer to group dynamics—you and your team, your team and other teams, etc. These sections are not for design decisions or technical issues.
- Gains made: First, please link to your milestone report for the week (if you have one). This helps out the TAs, which helps your grade. State specifically what you have accomplished as well as what you have not accomplished. This gives the rest of the class and the TAs an idea of where you are in relation to thought you would be. Please clearly state if you have not accomplished a goal for the week; honesty is rewarded.
- Obstacles encountered: Document issues you’re currently stuck on, as well as those you have worked through. Consider creating and linking to a document library for resolved issues so that you don’t have to dig through journals later to rediscover resolutions.
- Proposed solutions: Ideas on how to get around your current roadblocks. We realize you may not know the answer, so tell us how you’ll figure it out. You don’t have to say how you’ve resolved previous issues, but again, you should seriously consider posting that information somewhere else. John Madden solutions will not earn many points.
- What seems to be working and why: Be specific! Dig deeper than “everyone is getting along, because we’re all nice people.”
- What does not seem to be working and why: See above.
- Proposals for change: How will you fix the problems mentioned above? Again, John Madden comments will not earn points.
- Peer review: The above sections are for general remarks; use names here. This section exists to encourage good practices and call attention to less general issues.
Journal Formatting:
- Rename link text to something short and intuitive.
- Consider numbered lists for problem/solution sections. This makes sure you provide a solution for each problem and helps the TAs match them up.
Late Policy:
- -5 for first 12 hours late (until Saturday noon)
- -5 for next 12 hours late (until Saturday midnight)
- -10 for each following day
